"Shout
Sister!" is a women's choir with Ontario chapters in Kingston, Picton,
Brockville, Belleville, Ottawa West, Ottawa Centre, Northumberland, Durham
and Haliburton. Our newest addition is Peterborough Chapter.
We
also have an Ottawa
Chapter of
"Shout
BROTHER Choir"
Kingston's favorite blues and
jazz lady, Juno nominee Georgette Fry formed the first female choir in
Kingston in September 2002. Our family has now grown to 10 Shout Sister!
Chapters and one Shout Brother! Chapter. Our weekly practices focus on
the joyful love of singing. These choirs' shows exude the same joy and
love, only with the increased intensity one experiences in performance.
The choirs sing a wide range of popular music.
Public performance was not an original intention for the choirs, but demand
has taken them to a number of venues. They have appeared on the Vinyl
Café's Christmas show in Kingston, for Stephen Lewis during his
speaking tour, for Tom Jackson's food bank tour, they have opened for
the world famous "Nylons" and performed on Parliament Hill.
They take their practices to area senior's facilities throughout the year.
This is in addition to their annual charity fundraiser each spring.
This is no ordinary choir - this is a celebration of life in song. Unlike
many choirs, members are not required to read music or audition. Georgette
provides recordings of the various musical parts and the women learn their
parts and sing straight from the heart. This choir fills a need for inexperienced
singers. Being allowed to sing with a choir for the first time is very
powerful and joyful. Experienced singers find the relaxed atmosphere and
repertoire of popular music a welcome change. In an interview Georgette
said, "I can appreciate the beauty and intricacy of a reading choir
and its virtuosity. But I think there is room for a choir with real people
singing from their hearts." "Shout Sister" and their audiences
couldn't agree more.
